Twilight Characters

Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan

Personality:

Bella is described as understanding, caring, and intelligent, with a dry sense of humor, and is noted for being very clumsy. She hates dressing up, saying that makeup "is a pain" and that she feels uncomfortable in impractical, elegant clothes. She has a very private mind, which is thought to be why Edward is unable to see her thoughts, and she is determined to become a vampire. She is also said to be a terrible liar, but occasionally demonstrates good acting ability. She also gets faint at the smell of blood.

Appearance in Twilight:
Twilight sees 17-year-old Bella Swan move to live with her father in her birthtown of Forks, Washington. There, she becomes intrigued by a student, Edward Cullen. Edward saves her life on multiple occasions, exhibiting super-human qualities. Bella learns from family friend Jacob Black that legends say the Cullen family are vampires. Edward eventually admits to this truth, though his family hunts only animals, not humans, through moralistic choice.Edward constantly warns Bella against being with him, perceiving her life to be at risk if she continues to associate with him because the scent of her blood is so much more powerful to him than that of any other human. Bella's love and confidence in Edward's restraint is such that his warnings go unheeded, and on an outing with the Cullens she becomes the target of a sadistic vampire, James. With his family's help, Edward is able to save Bella from James' predations, but Edward is still unwilling to change Bella into a vampire himself.

Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen
Personality:
Edward explains that like other vampires, he does not need to breathe, though he chooses to do so out of habit and because it is helpful to smell his environment. He cannot digest regular food, and compares its attractiveness for him to the prospect of eating dirt for a regular person. As well, like other vampires, Edward is not able to sleep. Edward is musical, able to play the piano like a virtuoso. He enjoys a wide range of music, including classical, jazz, progressive metal, alternative rock, punk rock, but dislikes country. He prefers indie rock to mainstream, and appreciates rock and classical music equally. n addition to the traits he shares with his fellow vampires, Edward has certain abilities that are his alone. He is the fastest of the Cullens, able to outrun any of them. Perhaps as a result of a talent for empathy in his human life, Edward can also read the mind of anyone within a few miles of himself; Bella is the sole exception to this rule, which Meyer has stated is due to Bella having a very private mind.

Appearance in Twilight:
Twilight sees Edward meet Bella Swan, a human girl whose thoughts he is unable to read, and whose blood smells overwhelmingly sweet to him. He fights a growing attraction to her, but after saving her life on several occasions, succumbs and eventually falls in love with her. Edward admits to Bella that he is a vampire, and that although he retains the physical body of a 17 year old, he was actually born on June 20, 1901. His adoptive father, Carlisle Cullen, transformed him into a vampire in 1918, to spare him death from the Spanish influenza epidemic in Chicago, Illinois. Carlisle instilled in him a sense of morality uncommon in most vampires, and central to his way of life is the refusal to consider humans as food.

Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black
Personality:
Bella describes Jacob as a "happy person" who extends this happiness to the people around him. As Jacob's character emerges in New Moon, he is shown to be cheery, passionate, adventurous, but quick in temper. Due to his werewolf status, Jacob is also able to phase at will into a giant wolf creature. His body temperature is warmer than a human's; it reaches about 109.8 °F, which allows him to withstand very cold weather. His body also heals quickly, he can communicate with his werewolf pack telepathically when in wolf form, and he is physically enhanced to be stronger and faster. Werewolves do not age if they regularly turn into their wolf form. Once they begin phasing, a werewolf may "imprint"– a method of finding one's soul-mate– and act as a close family member until the imprintee is old enough to be their lover. While the imprintee has a choice, their decision is almost guaranteed due to the amount of devotion the imprinter shows. Jacob imprints on Edward and Bella's daughter Renesmee, and acts as an older brother but also gives her a bracelet, the Quileute version of a promise ring.

Appearance in Twilight:
Jacob has a small role in this book. He is one of Bella Swan's oldest friends that she knew from visiting her father, Charlie Swan, in the summer. When Bella flirts with him to get information on Edward Cullen and his family, he introduces her to the idea that Edward is a vampire by telling her Quileute legends.
